Why some voice agents sound robotic
Usually three reasons. They speak in long paragraphs. They pause too long before answering. And they say the same thing no matter what the caller said.
What a natural one gets right
Short turns, so the conversation moves. Fast responses, so it does not feel like a bad phone line. Interrupt handling, so a caller can cut in. And answers written for speech, not copied off a web page.
How to test one in ten minutes
Call it. Interrupt it mid sentence. Ask something off script. Say you need to think about it and see what it does next. If the conversation still feels human, that is the bar.
What to listen for
- Does it let you interrupt, and does it stop talking when you do?
- Are its answers short enough to follow on a phone?
- Does it sound like your business, or a call centre?
- Does it hand over to a person when that is the right call?
A good agent is not perfect. It is useful, and it is honest about what it does not know.
